Programme Background

The Netherlands is home to a significant semiconductor ecosystem, with companies like ASML, NXP, ASM and BESI. The sector employs approximately 50.000 people working in 300 companies. The need to seek additional talent is growing. Therefore, the Dutch Government has developed a national reinforcement plan for microchip talent, known as the ‘Project Beethoven’. The relationships of the Netherlands with countries in Southeast Asia are of particular importance. Southeast Asia combines a young and talented human resource base, growing economies who mostly have arrived at a middle-income status, predictable governance and a welcoming environment for investment from the Netherlands and Europe.

In this context, the first Netherlands-Southeast Asia Semiconductor Short Talent Programme will be organized in 11 – 22 August 2025 in Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The programme is building on a growing track record of engagement between the Netherlands and Southeast Asian countries and considering how knowledge interests of the Netherlands are converging with interests and needs in the Southeast Asia region. It aims to strengthen cooperation and foster student mobility and professional exchange thus enhancing the interconnectedness of the Dutch ecosystem with the emerging semiconductor ecosystems in the Southeast Asia region.

 

Programme Objectives

  • Promote the Netherlands as a portal to knowledge and business opportunities in the semiconductor industry, including strengthening positive (diplomatic, trade & investment, R&D) relations between the Netherlands and countries in Southeast Asia
  • Generate interest to study and work in the Netherlands in the semiconductor field
  • Contribute to the development of Southeast Asia’s high-skilled semiconductor workforce
  • Improve Dutch businesses’ access to talent and promote Dutch investment in Southeast Asia
  • Contribute to building a Netherlands semiconductor alumni network in Southeast Asia, which will support expanded future cooperation in the semiconductor field

 

Programme Components

  • Lectures by Dutch Experts from Industry and Academia
  • Lectures by Malaysian, and possible other Southeast Asian Experts
  • Lectures by Southeast Asian Alumni who work in the Semiconductor industry in NL
  • Company visits: NXP, Besi and Neways – Other companies might still be added
  • Group Assignments (groups of 6 students, one from each participating country)
  • Networking and Social Engagements

 

Programme Coverage

  • Programme participation fee is waived
  • Accommodation and local transports will be provided
  • Certificate of completion
  • Exposure to wide semiconductor industry networks and intercultural peers from the SEA region

 

Target Countries – Students

  • Target Countries: 6 countries in the Southeast Asia region, including Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines
  • Target Students: 60 participants – 10 active master and bachelor students in STEM-related majors per country in which most possibly 2 students per university

Eligibility Criteria

1. Nationality Applicants are required to have a nationality that is similar to the country of origin of where their universities are located.
2. Age requirement Applicants should be between 21 and 35 years old at the time of participating in the programme.
3. Academic aspects As for academic qualifications, the applicants should meet these requirements:

1.       Active master and bachelor students in STEM-related majors, preferably students who have completed at least 1 (one) semester of their master’s degree period and in the final year for bachelor degree.

2.       Applicants should have a GPA of at least 3.00 (in index of 4.0 form) or equal.

3.       Applicants should have been exposed to or have sufficient knowledge of at least 3 (three) subjects from the following list.

a.      Integrated Circuit (IC) Design

b.      Microelectronics

c.      Semiconductor Manufacturing, process including back-end and front-end, wafer fabrication, assembly, testing and packaging

d.      Semiconductor equipment

e.      Artificial Intelligence

f.        Control System Design

g.      Power Systems

h.      High Voltage Testing Process

i.         Software Engineering

j.         System Engineering

k.       Material Science

l.         Advanced Optics

m.    Optomechatronics

n.      Mechatronics design

o.      Photonics

p.      Quantum computing

4. Required documents Applicants who have been nominated by their university are expected to submit an application via the Delta platform managed by Nuffic Southeast Asia. The application will include:

1.       Copy of a passport valid for at least another 6 (six) months by the end of August 2025

2.       1 (one) page of Motivation letter covering these points:

a.      What is your motivation to participate in this short programme?

b.      What are your expectations after participating in this short programme?

c.      What are your plans for contributing to the development of the semiconductor industry?

3.       Curriculum Vitae (CV)

4.       Nomination letter by home university

5. English proficiency Applicants should have at least a working level of English proficiency, equal to:

1.       TOEFL: iBT 80 / ITP 550

2.       IELTS: 6.0

6. Leadership & community engagement (optional) Applicants who have demonstrated a contribution to leadership and community engagement would be a plus, such as:

1.       Active in students’ organisation or association

2.       Active in research and development on engineering lab activities, specifically in the semiconductor field

3.       Active in international programme(s)

This is to be highlighted in the CV.

7. Consent and commitment Applicants shall comply with the procedures and regulations to participate in this short programme, including:

1.       Follow all recruitment steps and participate in the programme attentively

2.       Endorse the objectives of the short programme and strive to contribute to achieving the goals of the programme

3.       Be willing to join and share the knowledge and experiences gained during the short programme in further dissemination activities in the home country after returning back.

SMU’s Visiting Student Programme (VSP) 2025

SMU’s Visiting Student Programme (VSP) 2025

SEMARANG, IOUNDIP.ac.id – We would like to take this opportunity to introduce SMU’s Visiting Student Programme (VSP), an exciting initiative that will provide your students with a transformative global experience to enrich their academic and personal growth.

VSP is a fee-paying programme with a study period of one or two academic terms, each lasting 16 weeks (inclusive of one week of recess). The programme is open to undergraduate students from any university. Students under VSP can take on a wide range of courses across various disciplines, including business, accountancy, economics, social sciences, law, computer science, and interdisciplinary studies. Tuition fees, cost of living, and other pertinent information can be found in the programme factsheet (link can be found in the ‘Important Information’ section below).

Nominations for the Visting Student Programme (VSP) for Fall 2025 (Aug – Dec) are now open and students can apply directly through the application portal or be nominated by your university. If you wish to nominate them through your university, the nomination and application details are below. We would be happy to arrange a call to discuss this opportunity further.

NOMINATION
To nominate, please complete the attached excel form and follow the steps below:

1) As we will be using an automated process to register your nominations, please use the provided template without modifications and return the completed form via the same email thread. Please do NOT use a fresh email as the data will not be captured in our system.

2) Students are allowed to read 2 to 4 courses during their term at SMU. If your students need to take 5 courses, please indicate this special request on the nomination form.

3) Kindly avoid nominating students in their final term for exchange at SMU to prevent any risk to their graduation if they cannot enrol in or pass required courses.

4) If you have sent us your nominations earlier, we seek your kind assistance to re-submit the list using the attached form. A “NIL” reply is appreciated if you are not nominating students to us in the upcoming term.

Nomination deadline: 15 April 2025

Please feel free to let us know if you need a deadline extension.

APPLICATION
Application instructions will be sent to the nominated students directly and progressively from 15 April onwards. To avoid data mismatches and delays, kindly request your students to:

1) Use the same email address indicated in your nomination form for their online application at SMU.

2) Upload all the necessary documents into the application portal (including a passport the photo identification page of a valid passport with a validity period of no less than six months from the end-date of the study term – i.e., for 7 June 2026 for 1-term and 3 November 2027 for 1-year).

3) Be flexible with their study plan and get more courses approved for credit mapping purposes.

Application deadline: 25 April 2025

Please encourage your students to submit their online application as soon as possible – and before the deadline. Letters of Acceptance (LoA) will be sent to the students electronically around mid-May.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
1) Please encourage all students to carefully read our factsheet and website for information about VSP@SMU.

2) As course enrolment at SMU is done through a live bidding system, offline enrolment is generally not permitted to maintain the integrity and fairness of the system. To give students more flexibility during the bidding process, we kindly request that the home university approves at least 16 courses in advance.

3) A digital transcript will be sent to the student’s SMU campus email within three months after the release of the final examination results (mid-March for Fall Term and mid-July for Spring Term). Please note that no hardcopy of the transcript will be issued. SMU is unable to accommodate requests for early release of the official digital transcript, including for graduation or higher education plans. Additionally, due to the security features of the OpenCerts transcript, we are unable to send the transcript to any third parties, including the student’s home university.
