Online Summer Course – Race, Migration, and Multiculturalism

Globalization has facilitated increased migration and contributed to growing demographic diversity. While such heterogeneity offers opportunities for inclusive development, multiculturalism—which embodies respect for cultural differences—also presents certain challenges. In particular, multicultural societies may be susceptible to identity-based conflicts along ethnic and racial lines. Weak social cohesion can intensify these divisions, potentially resulting in discrimination, racism, and, in extreme cases, ethnic cleansing. Humanitarian crises in various regions, wherein ethnic or racial communities experience systemic social exclusion and human rights violations, underscore the urgent need for a global understanding of migrant communities and the limitations they face. Developing such understanding is essential for reimagining how multiculturalism, equality, and justice ought to be realized in contemporary societies. The expert lecture series of the Social Anthropology UNDIP Summer Course 2026 offers scholarly discussions on social-humanitarian issues concerning migrant communities across various geopolitical regions.
These courses will be delivered online in English and accessible to students and emerging scholars globally, with no fees applicable. Certificates of completion will be conferred upon participants who attend a series of events.

Candidacy applications are open from 7 April—2 May 2026.
