About MEJIC
Indonesia is an archipelagic country which consists of more than 17.500 islands and two third of the territory surrounded by the sea. This country is also placed in the cross section between two continents, Eurasia – Australia and two oceans, Pacific and India. Situated in the most dangerous ring of fire, which stretched from Alaska to Siberia, Indonesia has many active volcanoes which can erupt at anytime. Another thing is that this country is categorized as one of the longest coastline in the world, gives both benefit and disadvantages at the same time. These all conditions lead the people to live among the natural disaster such us volcano eruptions, flood, land slide, land subsidence, seasonal flood, tidal flood, earthquake, tsunami and so on. Natural disasters in Indonesia can usefully be divided into major disasters, medium level disasters, and lesser disasters which although causing less damage are very common across Indonesia. These can conveniently be considered as macro, mezzo, and micro events. Policies to respond to natural disasters in Indonesia, which are still in an early stage of being developed, need to develop strategies to deal with each of these different types of disasters.
