Programme Background
The Netherlands is home to a significant semiconductor ecosystem, with companies like ASML, NXP, ASM and BESI. The sector employs approximately 50.000 people working in 300 companies. The need to seek additional talent is growing. Therefore, the Dutch Government has developed a national reinforcement plan for microchip talent, known as the ‘Project Beethoven’. The relationships of the Netherlands with countries in Southeast Asia are of particular importance. Southeast Asia combines a young and talented human resource base, growing economies who mostly have arrived at a middle-income status, predictable governance and a welcoming environment for investment from the Netherlands and Europe.
In this context, the first Netherlands-Southeast Asia Semiconductor Short Talent Programme will be organized in 11 – 22 August 2025 in Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The programme is building on a growing track record of engagement between the Netherlands and Southeast Asian countries and considering how knowledge interests of the Netherlands are converging with interests and needs in the Southeast Asia region. It aims to strengthen cooperation and foster student mobility and professional exchange thus enhancing the interconnectedness of the Dutch ecosystem with the emerging semiconductor ecosystems in the Southeast Asia region.
Programme Objectives
- Promote the Netherlands as a portal to knowledge and business opportunities in the semiconductor industry, including strengthening positive (diplomatic, trade & investment, R&D) relations between the Netherlands and countries in Southeast Asia
- Generate interest to study and work in the Netherlands in the semiconductor field
- Contribute to the development of Southeast Asia’s high-skilled semiconductor workforce
- Improve Dutch businesses’ access to talent and promote Dutch investment in Southeast Asia
- Contribute to building a Netherlands semiconductor alumni network in Southeast Asia, which will support expanded future cooperation in the semiconductor field
